I know it takes a lot of work to prepare and I would of never thought I would be accepted to run the oldest 100miler in the world. A dream come true!
Running up the escarpment is so special. The views and the supporters lining either side of the trail up to the top of the escarpment is incredible, a moment I will never forget. At this point, you realise the fun is really about to start. Luckily, this year there wasn’t any snow to be concerned about. The high country is technical, and I tried to run conservatively as I knew this would be important to save the legs and energy for later.
The heat was in the back of my mind as you descend quickly in elevation, it doesn’t take long for the temperature to warm up. The heat hits differently and the UV is harsh, but the humidity is very low. I made it a priority to keep cool with ice in my bandana as much as possible to keep the body temp down.
Climbing in and out of the Canyons is super challenging. I managed the climbing well and still had enough climbing legs to get me up Devil's Thumb efficiently (the biggest climb of the race). Picking up Brody, my pacer, at mile 62 (100km) was helpful and exciting as I entered the unknown. Wanting to lie down when it gets tough and having someone telling you to get up is hard, but thankful as it’s the push I needed to get that buckle.
Crossing Rucky Chucky River in the early hours of the morning was refreshing. I was so appreciative of the volunteers that had to sit for hours in the cold water, helping people across to achieve their goals. Even at all the aid stations, the help from volunteers is so good that you don’t want to leave the comfort.
78 miles in With the last third of the race becoming quite runnable, it was a run/walk situation from here. My knees were sore so at points, fast walking was the quickest way to move forward. Brody in front of me, shouting encouragement along helped a great deal too.
Seeing the Aussie flag on No Hands Bridge was special. It reminded me that I was only one of three Aussies to be racing – I felt so privileged and lucky to be a part of it all.
As we approached Robie Point, I knew we were close and the energy was uplifting.
Getting to the track and running to the finish is a memory that will last forever. Seeing Amanda, my wife, had me in tears. I can’t thank her enough, as well as my family and friends for supporting me to achieve my dreams. Without them all, it wouldn’t be possible.
It’s a privilege to have run Western States and complete it in 27:09:43. As one of only three Aussies to toe the line this year, it really was a dream come true. Thanks to Brody (my pacer) and the team from Wild Earth for all the support in getting me to the start line.
This was a fantastic shoe with lots of cushion and the new change to the upper is great. It's lighter and better fitting than previous models. Great for all types of terrain including all the technical stuff at Western States Endurance Run.
Love this hat, very open mesh top which Is great for hot conditions. Great fit for a slightly larger head. Nice and light and the flexible brim is good for storage in your pack.
These are a great fit, feature awesome UV400 protection and the frame is shaped really well. They sit nicely and seem like they are sweat-resistant.
The name says it all! I have sworn by this stuff for a long time, really easy to apply and it just works. Apply to your feet for happy toes too!
Wow, what a great shirt, I love the fit. The pattern is awesome and stands out very much! I received lots of comments in the US about it as well - 10/10!
