Easy to make healthy trail mixes

in 3 easy steps!

If you are looking to pack a quick easy snack that is tasty, lightweight, nutrient packed and energy dense on your next adventure then look no further than a healthy home made trail mix.

Whilst store bought varieties are easily available they may not always be the healthiest or freshest way to enjoy this convenient snack.

Making your own trail mix allows you to control the flavour and quality of your produce ensuring you are not simply loading up on empty calories.

For a quick, easy and tasty trail mix of your own simply follow these 3 steps, purchasing organic and sulphite free wherever possible:

1 - Choose a base:

A base of nuts and seeds is the best place to start.

Containing a ton of calories & loads of nutrients nuts and seeds are the perfect base for a trail mix. Just remember not all nuts are created equal and some varieties can lead to inflammation. If you are going to be eating a lot of your trail mix then Looking for nuts with the best Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio is recommended, otherwise a good variety will suit most people.

Choose 3 or more of the following:

  • Macadamias
  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Brazil nuts
  • Pecans and Walnuts
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • flax and Sesame seeds
  • Coconut flakes

2- Sweet or savoury?

Depending on your palate you may prefer a savoury or a sweet kick for your trail mix.

Choose a preference, then choose 2 additions to add to your mix. Even if you are not a ‘sweet’ fan it is still recommended to add one of the sweeter ingredients to break up the flavours.

Sweet:
When choosing dried fruit remember to choose fruits that are not sweetened (many fruits such as cranberries are usually sweetened with sugar cane or apple juice).

  • Dried blueberries
  • Dried strawberries
  • Apricots
  • Banana chips
  • Figs
  • Dates
  • Dried Mango
  • Cacao nibs
  • Carob
  • Dark chocolate
  • Coffee beans

Savoury:

  • Beef Jerky
  • Kale chips

3- Spice it up
For an extra flavour burst incorporate one or two teaspoons of the following:

  • Sea salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger
  • Chilli

Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container and enjoy! It is a good idea to ration trail mixes out into smaller containers or zip lock bags as it is easy to over consume these Moorish goodies.
