It may seem obvious but I only recently came to the realisation that trail runners can act as three shoes in one. Your urban shoe to explore the town during the day and night, a road runner or gym shoe and a hiking or trail running shoe if you decide to adventure on the trails. Picture this, you’re packing for a summer trip while trying to keep your bag under the insane 7kg budget airline weight limit. Staring into your wardrobe at a sea of shoes knowing realistically you only have space for two pairs - some sandals and one other pair...
Here’s why I think trail runners are the best choice.
Trail running shoes are lightweight by nature with most coming in under 300 grams. They are usually made from thinner materials and can dry quickly if they get wet. The lightweight design also usually means they are much more malleable and easy to squish into your backpack, making them a perfect candidate for a travel shoe.
Trail running shoes are designed for a variety of activities including running, hiking and walking. The best trail running shoes are designed with an aggressive tread to handle different types of terrain, from slippery rocks to wet muddy trails. So, they’ll have absolutely no problem navigating the cobblestone streets of Rome or the steep inclines of the Machu Picchu trail.
Many trail running shoes feature superior cushioning as they are designed for long runs on difficult terrain. This provides additional shock absorption and reduces impact on joints making them more comfortable for long periods of wear. And lastly, in terms of comfort, they are designed for breathability, keeping feet cool and reducing sweat buildup which is perfect for a hot day out sightseeing.
Top Shoes for Lightweight Travel
The Fresh Foam Hierro V8 series by New Balance features a super stylish design that is made as an all-rounder. They can handle a variety of terrains with a design that features fresh foam midsole for super-soft cushioning and unparalleled comfort. The Honeycomb structure enhances cushioning during landing and provides a responsive feel during take-off. The shoes have a 6mm drop and a Vibram® Megagrip outsole for unparalleled grip on dry and wet surfaces. Weighing in at 318 grams, they’re the perfect all-rounder shoe for travel!
Why I like them: They look cool, are lightweight, and comfortable and can be worn for pretty much any occasion from a night on the town to hiking down muddy valleys.
The HOKA Speedgoat 6 stands out as the perfect choice for those seeking a dependable all-purpose trail shoe. This model is distinguished by its versatile nature, making it suitable for all distances and types of training. Experience the optimal blend of grip, protection, and stability as you venture into unknown places with this trail shoe! Weighing at only 278 grams it’s perfect to pack for an overseas adventure.
Why I like them: They have some real pizzazz with the sherbet/beetroot colour pallet and have been really hyped by our Wild Earth ultra runners and ambassadors. A firm favourite with serious runners, you can’t hit an ultra race without seeing the Speedgoats making an appearance.
The Nnormal Kjerag trail running shoes, were designed by world-class runner Kilian Jornet. The shoe weighs 195 grams in a size 9 (according to our ambassador Sam Weir) with a 6mm drop, making it super lightweight. It features a Vibram sole with 3.5-5mm lugs, suitable for various terrains, especially in challenging conditions. The upper part of the shoe is made with a Kevlar weave, providing high durability against rocks and rough surfaces, particularly around the toe box (which is also wide, helping prevent cramping during long days of adventuring).
Why I like them: The understated design makes them really easy to wear and they can handle anything. Another top pick from some of our best ultra runners including Sam Weir, check out his video review here.
The On Running Cloudventure’s are another all-rounder which can handle technical trails top of everyday wear. Weighing in at 250 grams with a 6mm drop. The design features their softest and most breathable upper to date. It’s extremely durable with about 80% recycled polyester. Highly ventilated with a long-lasting fit for maximum protection and comfort.
Why I like them: They’re a fashionable shoe with a minimalist design and darker colour pallete which means they can easily go with any outfit.
