However, if you are anything like me, you may be scrambling at the last minute to find a campsite to spend the long weekend. Lucky for you, this year I am more prepared than ever and have done the research for you on the best (and available) campsites in every state and territory of Aus.
Please note: all campsites are available for 3 nights of the Easter long weekend (Friday 29, Saturday 30 and Sunday 31) as of 1 February 2024. Bookings are a must (for most) so get in quick to secure your spots!
SS Dorrigo Camping Area - Queensland Government
As a Queenslander, I love the Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area for camping. With 7 campgrounds on offer and heaps of campsites available, this is a must for Easter camping. Inskip located in the Northern Sunshine Coast is 3 hours from Brisbane CBD. The Inskip campgrounds sit just back from the beach and the campsites are nestled between cyprus pines and she-oaks. Nearby is Rainbow Beach for 4WD and only a ferry ride away is K’gari for bigger adventures.
The Basin Campground - New South Wales Government
Located in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park less than an hour from Sydney’s CBD is the Basin Campground. There is a lovely inland lagoon and sheltered beach for a nice swim and making friends with the local kookaburras and wallabies. For a day trip, enjoy the 2.5km walk to the Basin Aboriginal art site which sits on The Basin Track and features over 50 engravings of humans and animals.
Please note to get to the campground, you must either walk in 2.8km from the closest carpark or you can arrive via ferry if you are opting for a larger camping set-up.
Allenvale Campground - Parks Victoria
The Allenvale Campground is your key to an available campsite on the Great Ocean Road (sounds almost impossible, huh?). On the outskirts of Lorne, the Allenvale Campground is just over 2 hours away from Melbourne CBD. Although it isn’t directly beach camping on the Great Ocean road, it is only a 6-minute drive to the beach town of Lorne and 8 minute drive to the beach. Beach isn’t your thing? Nearby are 4 waterfalls all within 15 minutes of driving. Speaking of water, you may be lucky and spot one of the platypuses known to inhabit the St George River at the banks of the campground.
This campground is suitable for tents only (no car access) and the carpark is a 230m walk away.
Antechamber Bay Campground - South Australia Government
On beautiful Kangaroo Island is Antechamber Bay Campground. Just over 3 hours away from Adelaide CBD, this campground is just set back from the beach and is a short walk to the Chapman River which is great for kayaking. There are walking trails nearby and there is heaps to do on Kangaroo Island including day hikes, wildlife sanctuaries and viewing seals at Seal Bay.
Henry White Oval Campground - Western Australia Government
Located in Yanchep National Park, Henry White Oval Campground is only 40 minutes from the Perth CBD. There are little luxuries included at this campground including hot showers, barbeque, picnic tables and a dishwashing sink. Enjoy bushwalks in the national park, relax by the nearby lake or take a cave tour in the limestone Yanchep Cave.
Bookings are a must for Henry White Oval Campground, particularly for Easter.
South Bruny Campgrounds - Tasmanian Government
The South Bruny Campgrounds are the only campgrounds in our list where a booking is not considered a must as all campsites are first come first served. There are three campgrounds to choose from - Jetty Beach, The Neck and Cloudy Corner. All campgrounds have easy access to the beach. If you are a surfer, Cloudy Corner is the pick and for a family camping trip, Jetty Beach is recommended with its sheltered beach and snorkelling access.
Remember to grab your National Parks Pass ahead of time in order to stay at the campgrounds.
Wangi Falls Campground - Northern Territory Government
For a weekend away in the NT, check out Wangi Falls Campground in Litchfield National Park. Only 90 minutes from Darwin, Wangi Falls is a beautiful spot to spend the Easter holidays. The campgrounds are 2WD and 4WD accessible and include gas barbeques, showers and the nearby Wangi Falls Cafe if you are keen on a hot cappuccino or their famous mango cheesecake.
Due to weather conditions, unfortunately, the walking track near the campsite is closed, however, the Tolmer Falls and Greenant Creek walking tracks are both currently open to get your waterfalls fix. Please also ensure to grab your National Parks pass to access the campgrounds.
Honeysuckle Campground - Australian Capital Territory Government
Although the ACT is the smallest of them all, it still has some great campgrounds on offer. Honeysuckle Campground is 50 minutes southwest of Canberra in Namadgi National Park. The campground features gas barbeques, picnic tables and a covered shelter, but please note to bring your own water as there are no taps on site.
In Namadgi National Park there are heaps to do over the Easter long weekend including bushwalking, mountain biking, climbing and birdwatching.
